How to Care for Fabric Furniture So It Lasts for Years

Posted by Milly Home Furniture on Oct 28th 2026

A little regular care goes a long way toward keeping your sofa, sectional or chairs looking great. These simple habits help fabric furniture stay fresh, comfortable and beautiful for years.

Check the cleaning code first

Look for the care tag under the cushions or on the frame. Most upholstery uses one of these codes:

  • W: water-based cleaners are safe.
  • S: use solvent-based (water-free) cleaners only.
  • W/S: either water-based or solvent-based cleaners can be used.
  • X: vacuum or brush only. No liquid cleaners.

Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot before using it on a visible area.

Vacuum weekly

Dust and crumbs work their way into fibers and wear them down over time. Use an upholstery attachment once a week, and don't forget the crevices and under the cushions.

Flip and rotate cushions

If your cushions are removable, flip and rotate them every week or two. This spreads out wear so seats stay even and keep their shape longer. Fluff loose back cushions and pillows to keep them full.

Blot spills right away

When something spills, blot it gently with a clean, white cloth. Don't rub, which can push the stain deeper and damage the fabric. Work from the outside of the spot toward the center so it doesn't spread.

Protect from sun and heat

Direct sunlight can fade fabric over time. Use curtains or blinds during the brightest part of the day, or position furniture away from windows. Keep pieces a safe distance from heaters and fireplaces too.

Pets and kids

A washable throw blanket over favorite seats makes cleanup easy. Keep pets' nails trimmed, and use a lint roller or rubber glove to lift pet hair from plush fabrics.

Plan a deep clean

Every year or so, consider a professional upholstery cleaning, especially for light-colored or heavily used pieces.
